20 Places to Visit in Udaipur

Udaipur. They call it the 'Venice of the East,' and once you are within the city, the reasons become rather too obvious. The city has been laid down by the soft, rolling hills of Aravallis, and is considered very famous for its lakes of beauty. From shimmering temples to palaces floating upon the water, Udaipur can often seem like something out of a dream. Following are 20 must-see places if one ever finds himself here:

Lake Palace:

Picture this: a palace on the water. Built in 1734 by Maharana Jagat Singh, it is now a five-star hotel. On Jag Niwas Island, it stands in the middle of Lake Pichola, being absolutely other-worldly, and fills a fairy tale time that became different. You have to actually see this because it's just so surreal.

Fateh Sagar Lake:

Second biggest lake of Udaipur- this is one place you wouldn't want to miss at all. Maharana Jai Singh had created it back in 1678. You will go to three islands through a boat ride out of which one consists of a zoo and Nehru Park. A boat ride here seems like a gentle getaway.

City Palace:

Grandiose, ostentatious, and simply huge. City Palace is the blend of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. It affords a spectacular view of Lake Pichola. Being built during the reign of Maharana Udai Singh II, it is equally impressive even today.

Lake Pichola:

Lake Pichola was built in 1362. In a length and width of 3 miles and 2 miles, respectively, this lake holds some of the most beautiful sights-Udaipur City Palace, Jag Mandir, and Mohan Mandir. The magic of the scenes that envelope this lake is simply fascinating when the day turns into night.

Vintage Car Museum:

This has old cars, well-maintained and restored, and put on display for all to see. The Vintage Car Museum was opened in 2000 and showcases cars that belonged to the Maharanas of Mewar. If you love cars, this place will take you to times back. Above 70-year-old cars still shining today!

Jagdish Temple:

It was built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The interiors are completely filled with fine carvings, and they contain some great painted walls and decorated ceilings. You enter this space where you will find peace amidst so much art and devoutness.

Bagore Ki Haveli:

An 18th-century haveli that stands on the waterfront of Lake Pichola. You’ll find costumes, paintings, and even some modern art inside. It’s a Rajput architectural gem, preserving the stories of Mewar in every corner.

Saheliyon Ki Bari:

Built by Maharana Sangram Singh in the 18th century, this garden is a serene retreat constructed for royal ladies. The place is filled with fountains, marble statues, and expansive lawns. Quiet. Peaceful. The perfect escape.

Shilpgram Fair:

Once a year, this lively craft fair comes to life, showcasing the best of Rajasthan’s art, textiles, and craft. Colourful. Exciting. The workshops, traditional skill demonstrations, and bustling bazaar make it the ideal spot to pick up something authentic.

Gulab Bagh and Zoo: Spread over more than 100 acres, Gulab Bagh is known for its roses. But that is not all. There is also a zoo around the place that houses lions, deer, and tigers. It is a quiet place and is meant for nature lovers.

Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace:

Built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1884, this palace offers a wide, panoramically sighted view over Udaipur. Monsoon or sunset, this place is a thing of absolute magic. The sky and the landscape seem to be out of a painting.

Jaisamand Lake:

The second-largest artificial lake in all of Asia is Jaisamand Lake. It was built in the 17th century by Rana Jal Singh and is huge three islands in the middle, each having its own charm. Even some tribal communities live here. You'll go back in time.

Jagmandir:

It has another name: Lake Garden Palace. Constructed on an island in Lake Pichola, it was laid out by Maharana Amar Singh, Karan Singh, and Jagat Singh. The palace formed the summer resort of the royalty. Can one imagine the summer parties held there?

Maharana Pratap Memorial:

Built by Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar, the memorial is dedicated to the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap. A striking statue of the Maharana astride his prized horse, Chetak, stands tall here. It's an emotional spot for anyone interested in Udaipur's past.

Udaipur Solar Observatory:

The best place to observe the sun in Asia! Located on an island in Fateh Sagar Lake, this observatory is equipped with various telescopes. For a unique experience, make sure you visit.

Dudh Talai Musical Garden:

A small lake is flanked by the rock garden, and Dudh Talai offers a scenic view of Lake Pichola and the City Palace. Take in the scenery while enjoying a horseback or camel ride. It's picturesque and peaceful.

Eklingji Temple:

This is a 108-temple complex. The stone carvings and intricate designs in this monument are breathtaking. For lovers of ancient craftsmanship, this is a must-visit.

Mansapurna Karni Ropeway:

Do you want an overall view of Udaipur? The Mansapurna Karni Ropeway links the Sri Karni Mata Temple to Deendayal Upadhyay Park. From the top, you will have a view of the City Palace, the Lake Pichola, and the surrounding hills. Worth it for the view!

Crystal Gallery:

As you enter the Fateh Prakash Palace, it will lead you to the Crystal Gallery. The place has thousands of priceless pieces; in fact, this is the most significant private collection in the world. Maharana Sajjan Singh was the first collector of this treasure in 1877. This is the gallery's true visual treat, due to its fragility and spectacles.

Bada Mahal:

A part of the City Palace complex, Bada Mahal is a marvel from the 17th century. The architectural design is complicated, consisting of high, vaulted ceilings, courtyards, and gardens that are just superb. Wandering in here seems like being teleported to another era altogether.
